About Ground Rule Studio

Ground Rule Studio is a materials design house making unique hand-crafted panels from waste materials. We offer our standard material boards, studio collection products, as well as bespoke materials service. Our materials can be used in wide-ranging applications.

Our process begins with us exploring the possibilities of waste materials on a smaller scale. The current recipe we use now for our materials could take weeks to perfect depending on the properties of the waste material.

Our mission is to change people’s perceptions around waste and open their eyes to the beauty of waste. We hope to inspire more people about sustainability and up-cycling.

About Maggie

Founded by visual designer Maggie Chan in 2018, Ground Rule Studio is a green product company committed to sourcing and up-cycling used materials collected within Hong Kong. With environmental impact in mind, Maggie mixes her love for design and advocating green concepts to create simple but timeless material panels and home accessories by using all-natural materials such as coffee grinds, saw dust, flowers, and leaves. Ground Rule Studio uses only biodegradable and eco-friendly materials for its products as well as packaging.

WASTE MADE WONDERFUL INITIATIVE

For such a densely populated city such as Hong Kong, we generate 6.4 million tons of waste each year. With the ban of China taking in our recyclable trash, Hong Kong can only collect and process only a minimum portion of recyclable waste. Our existing landfill is expected to be full by the year 2019. As a city built on  consumerism, each human being is adding a significant amount of waste to the planet in his or her lifetime. Despite the effort of the government to educate the public on the subject, a behaviour change takes time to ingrain into people's minds. What we want to do is to prevent some waste material from going into the landfills and giving these materials new life and offering it as an environmental material alternative for the public to use. Currently, there are no readily made eco-material offered in Hong Kong.

Waste made wonderful is an initiative taken by Ground Rule Studio to create broader awareness of the eco-conscious material substitutes for use for a range of creative industries. We want to take the opportunity to introduce the different waste streams we are currently creating from our daily habits and the impact it has on Hong Kong. Offering behind the scene of where the waste ends up after consumption. Encouraging designers to become more eco-conscious about their consumer behaviour and seek out new environmentally-friendly substitutes for their new product creation, and leverage their creative product to send an environmental message to the world.

As our objective, We want to inspire small to medium creative and artisan businesses to prioritise environmental sustainability practice into their creation. We want to collaborate with designers to utilize the material to a broader group and promote sustainable living culture. Through exhibits and workshops to the general public, we want them to gain insights about these materials and understand their capabilities with small hands-on projects. On top of that, we want to create a community and opportunities for local businesses to consider alternative ways to dispose of their waste to benefit the environment.

We want to drive awareness of the up-cycling movement and our products with a powerful ecosystem story. The next challenge we have is to look into technical development for a larger production run and stress testing the durability.
